Rain Interview in Comic-Con

Rain and his Ninja Assassins co-stars were at the Comic-Con last Thursday  (July 24th) to promote their movie, sign autographs,  and answer questions. Rain was interviewed by two reporters  in English and he had  a hard time answering them.  Rain‘s comprehension of the questions and the ability to speak another language was the object of ridicule in POPSEOUL site.

Rain indeed messed up on his English and his answers were way off the questions but despite the language difficulty, Rain managed to wear a smile at all times even on the question that made him uncomfortable (How does a Ninja perform sex with his girlfriend?). Below are the videos of his interview.

For people who can understand and speak English well might find Rain‘s answers funny, but that doesn’t give people the right to make fun of the person who tried hard to speak another language. There is a difference between intelligence and arrogance,  there is also a similarity between  arrogance and ignorance.

A person of intelligence does not make fun of someone who cannot speak a foreign  language well, instead, this person understands and appreciates the fact that someone is trying to learn and speak the language other than his/her own.

An arrogant person thinks he/she knows it all  and can make fun of someone else’s ability to speak another language ( ex. English). These people are also known as IGNORANTS, like  POPSEOUL and whoever agreed with her. Just because POPSEOUL can scribble some English words and maybe can carry out an English conversation (???), she thinks she is high and mighty in grammar and Merriam-Webster dictionary.

In America, if you try to speak English no matter how wrong it is, you are appreciated. In Korea, if foreigners try to speak Korean, they are appreciated no matter how much they messed it up. If a Korean hears another Korean speaks English, the “another” Korean will be the center of criticism.  JEALOUSY. I guess that’s how POPSEOUL and whoever agreed with her feels about Rain.

I am not Rain fan or member of clouds, I am just a person who happens to be bilingual  and who is simply sick of ARROGANT AND IGNORANT people bashing an individual who put an effort in learning to understand, read, and speak another language , specifically English.

just as i wanted to say..i’m from philippines living in canada for almost 4 years now. i hear a lot of people in canada who cant speak english really well, much much worst than rain but no one cares.. people here don’t mind if you’re not good in english because they know english is pretty hard to learn and also they know that english is not thier first language, so they understand.
some people are just too arogant and think they’re greater than others because they speak fluent english… like come on!!..

    u said it very well!
    True, Rain’s english is horrible,,
but POPSEOUL shouldnt make fun out of it..
*and to think that she’s originally korean too!! ughhh!*

To speak different languages is a gift. I have a Korean friend who studied English for ten years. She has mastered the writing part but awkward on the speaking part.

Conversational English is way different than English writing. Rain’s answers were funny because he just couldn’t find the correct words to use. It is natural for someone who doesn’t speak the language everyday.

Popseoul is just a prick. I bet you money, she may be able to write English but I don’t think she can speak the language very well. She will do the ummmm…..ahhhhh…..ummm too.

Now that’s what I call someone who’s really thinking…not just CLAIMING to be..unlike some others who instead of helping their fellowmen, are the very first ones to pull them down..pathetic life they’re living eh??

I could not agree more. As a linguistics student I highly admire any and everyone who is learning a different language. I plan on learning 5 and could not imagine making fun of someone’s skills, lest it happen to me as well. Karma is a b**** and it will come back around, I’m sure. Good thing Rain is so busy he probably doesn’t even know this is a topic of conversation on the web. I also find interesting the “fellow countrymen” statement; where a Korean will bash another Korean before they bash a foreigner. I find that to be true with so many cultures, if not all of them! It’s sad how that works. I guess I should study sociology to find out, haha.

hmmm funny but popseoul seems to have disappeared. tried to google them but can’t find the site…

It is just so apparent that a successful and handsome man as he is would get these kinds of media feedbacks I should say. It is all part of the showbiz world. But for the fans, our job is to encourage and support him, no matter what the detractors might say…. Some people did not like him for his inability to enunciate or speak correct English.. It is already a given that fans like him as a Korean celebrity and due to his Korean charms, talent and kharisma that he is able to penetrate the international scene beyond the admirations of his fellow Koreans. He is internationally well-adored and admired. My only wish is that something secretly is really going on between him and SHK. A humble fan’s own wish *_*/.. I hope that there is a FH2 and that the producers and handlers would do their very best to have you and SHK to do the project..,.maybe not as a series but a love story in a film outfit!!! God bless you Bi and SHK!!

Just want to say thank you so much for appreciating Rain’s effort in speaking English!!! Unlike that certain blog who loves to dig at Rain’s English, I can still remember the way she make fun of him in a supposely exclusive interview, how evil.

Sure he still can’t speak English well, but he has improved and I’m sure he’ll be able to converse comfortably in English in the near future.

    I wish him well..

you mean popseoul, right? i remember that interview, she was so 2-faced.

I can’t be considered as a Rain fan yet since i’ve only found out about him three months ago (accidentally watched Full House and then Love to Kill which i really liked).

The interview was indeed funny but cute rather than looking it as embarrassing. My native language is Greek and i was studying English from 10 years old. I did my BSc in San Diego (USA) and even though i could speak good English it was really hard at the beginning. It is not the same to learn proper grammar, writing essays etc in your own country than being in an English spoken country and not only speaking in English but being able to understand the different accents.

I mean, how many of us can start learning a different language at their 25? And having the time for it? And Asian languages are so different from the western ones right? So i definitely don’t agree with the comments like “hahaha he doesn’t speak good English”.

I think i am going to be a fan of his because i admire his courage and the big step he took, going to the USA, making a film while no one really knows him. It is a big challenge and i hope he does well! All the best 🙂

Just found that site today and after reading 2-5 posts…the person managing it…is crucial. Some of the things they typed made me roll my eyes.

    Yaaaa! Bravo! Way to go!
Poor rain, its unfair. No one is born speaking english. Everyone needs to learn. Its totally mean to make fun of someone. You can’t expect him to be perfect at everything. 😉
